Daryl Cartwright | Service to Secondary School Sport YSPOTY Winner

Daryl has served secondary school basketball at Mt Albert Grammar for 16 years and has been an inspiration to his students through his tremendous commitment. As the lead of the MAGS Basketball Academy, their top boys’ and girls’ teams have progressed into Auckland Premier Grade, with the Boys placing 3rd at the National Championships in 2019. Daryl was the Junior Tall Blacks U19 Men’s Assistant coach from 2012 – 2014 and was promoted to Head coach of the team from 2015-2017. In 2016, the Junior Tall Blacks created history when they won the FIBA Asia Cup to qualify for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup. This performance helped him win the 2016 Basketball New Zealand Coach of the Year award. From 2018-2021, he was one of the head coaches at the Steven Adams High School Invitational game which involved working with the top 40 secondary students around the country.
